My Worm Is Very Talented

Last fall, Paul told Don and me about a private lake nearby. The owner rents out time slots on the lake. Paul’s son, Jeff, and his wife had one of the time slots. They had purchased a ski and fishing boat from the owner. The time slot was Thursday evenings and they did a lot of water skiing, often inviting friends to join them. They also spent quite some time fishing and the bass fishing was quite good.

Paul had gone to the lake with his family several times. He and his grandson had caught a number of large bass over the summer and fall. Jeff told Paul to invite us out one of the evenings. I am sure he had heard about all of our bad fishing trips and took pity on us.

It was late in October when we made our trip out. This is supposed to be the time of the year when fish are really biting to prepare for winter. Jeff’s family was skiing when we arrived with Paul’s boat.

We fished along the opposite shore and caught almost nothing. The water was very clear, so I decided to fish with a rubber worm with many reflective speckles in it. I purchased a package in Texas after fishing with a guide. I started to catch bass.

Paul’s grandson asked his parents if he could fish with us. It turns out he had fished with his grandpa many times and had not always been really successful. In fact he was constantly kidding Paul about his lack of fishing prowess.

Upon noticing my luck with the rubber worm, he asked if he could fish with Mr. Laleman’s “magic worm”. I gave him one and he caught several fish. As the sun sank on our evening of successful fishing and on our fishing season, I gave Paul’s grandson my last magic worm.  It was a terrific way to end the season.

A few days later Connie and I left for our winter home in Texas where I picked up another package of magic.
